It's always nice around the New Year to invest a little quality time in a good spring clean. With that in mind we have decided to reboot our online presence with a sparkling new all-inclusive blog. Since 2004 we have crafted our sequential adventures under the Studio Blink Twice banner but from this post forth all projects will be released under The Etherington Brothers label ... which makes sense when you think about it.

You can stay up to date with ease by simply clicking on the 'subscribe to' link at the end of the posts, or clicking the 'Follow' link beneath our tabs on the right for updates via Google, Twitter, Yahoo, AIM, Netlog or OpenID. You'll then be informed whenever we update the blog. This will replace our old mailing list.

You'll still be able to find our gallery on Deviantart.com and our forum postings on Conceptart.com under the old SBT heading. Studioblinktwice.com will shortly close it's doors for good ... it's been a fun ride but it's time for a change.

So from now onwards all news relating to any project involving one or more Etherington will be released on the new blog: from Star Wars and Transformers Strips to solo art shows, from 700 page sketchbooks to illustrated novels, from paper to pixel to print, and from Malcolm Magic to Monkey Nuts to ... oops! Almost gave too much away!

Merry Christmas!

Hey folks! Well, it's here, the yuletide season! There's holly on my drawing board, Bobby has tinsel on his typewriter, and all at the Etherington Manor is festive and delightful! We're just about to hunker down in fromt of the great fireplace to roast some chestnuts and read some comics, but before we bolt and lock up the huge doors of the old studio for the holidays I wanted to come in and wish you all a very fine Christmas!

There's only one bit of news that simply can't wait until after chrimbo, and that's that 2010 will see the release of the first Monkey Nuts book! Monkey Nuts and The Diamond Egg of Wonders will drop in the autumn next year, published by the wondeful David Fickling Books and the mighty Random House, and as you can expect, we're pretty excited about it! More news very sooooooon!

In the meantime, stay warm, stay happy, and I'll see you all again after the holidays!

Weapon of Choice Group show opening night this Friday 11th December, all welcome!

Hey folks, a little fly-by posting today to invite you all to the opening night this Friday (11th December) of the Christmas Group Show at the Weapon of Choice Gallery here in Bristol. The line-up as usual features a killer group of artists, all of whom will have new work for sale, which you can take home on the day of purchase, to allow peeps to buy artworks as prezzies in time for Chrimbo. I've worked up a new painting just for the exhibition (progress pics attached), while I limber up for my solo show at the gallery in the New Year (news of that soon!).

So, come on down, enjoy some mulled wine, mince pies, check out the art, and just bask in all things festive and inky! The show runs from 11th Dec until 10th January, details on the gallery blog HERE.

Brand New Exclusive Limited Edition STRANSKI print available now!

Hey folks! So, as mentioned the other week, I have a brand new limited edition print featuring STRANKSI as part of the Howies/Ink-Dot exhibition. The prints are strictly limited to a run of 50, and quite a few of them went at the opening night last week here in Bristol, which is nice! The show is on in the Howies store here in Bristol until December, but if You can't get to the show, you can buy the prints online through the ink-dot site HERE

Here's the blurb about the prints:

"Giclee printing is essentially very high resolution print onto an archival paper using light fast UV stable inks. This gives giclee pieces an extremely high tolerance to environmental factors and give a life time guaranty. The prints produced for ink dot by Hello Blue are all printed on to 315gsm 100% cotton, acid and bleach free archival quality paper. They are then coated in a protective spray that gives the prints an added level of UV and moisture protection. Each print is lightfast for between 75 - 100 years worst case scenario. If kept sympathetically there is almost no limit as to how long they would last."

Here's a piccie of the print (which is a 3 -colour print, with all the tones being made up of Halftoning) along with a few snaps from the opening night ofd the show...

P.S. Oh, and a HUGE cheers to all those who came out to the Secret Wars battle on Saturday night, was a lot of fun drawing against some SERIOUSLY talented London scribblers, and to top it all we were lucky enough to win! Lovely.

Hey-hey, a late one here, couldn't take the wraps off it until everything was in place, but I'll be proudly representing Bristol in a Bris vs London Secret Wars live art battle tomorrow night at the Awesome Blue Mountain Club here in town. I'll be scribbling with top man Andy on the Bristol team, and we'll be up against a couple of top-notch street artists from good ole' London town, so it should be an enjoyable night.

El Sketchbook Lorenzo Volume 4 Released TODAY!

Hey-hey, folks, so I was going to save this one until December, but I've had some requests to release it early so that those of you who like to get the Kustom versions with original sketches can get your orders in in time for Chrimbo. So here we go, El Sketchbook Lorenzo volume 4: Weird Worlds is now available all over the world! Lovely.

This one's for all the concept art fans out there, and is packed to the gills with environmental sketchs, designs and fully finished illustrations, many of which have never been seen before. You can buy it HERE!

On a side note, I had a few mails from people this month letting me know of a print fault in some of the El Sketchbooks where the pages have all been printed in reverse order! As these books are printed per order, it's a fault at Lulu's end, so if you have this problem with a book, log into your lulu account, go to the "My Lulu" section you'll see a heading saying "My recent orders" Click the number beside the order and it'll take you to a page where you can report a fault with the book. They'll send you a replacement. Obviously I was really annoyed about this, and have sent lulu a big old complaint, so the problem should be fixed now, but if anyone else has this problem, please let me know so I can kick some a$$. The Etherington Brothers don't like their books being messed up by clumsy printers!

Meet Stranski

So, as mentioned a couple of weeks ago, I have pieces in a few shows this christmas, one of which is the Ink-dot exhibition at the Howies Store here in Bristol.

Ink-dot is an exhibition of 34 prints by some seriouly talented folks, and I'm lucky enough to have been invited to be a part of it. The Prints are all limited editions of 50, and are A2 in size. I'll be posting up an image of my print in a few weeks, once the show is underway.

Opens on November 26th and runs right up until Christmas.

My print features the first appearance of STRANSKI, a brand new comic property that you'll be hearing a lot more about over the next year, so stay tuned!

El Sketchbook Lorenzo Volume 4 coming soon!

Here's a really old piece I did a few years back that I never got round to posting up here. It was a press piece for MOON! which was to go on the cover of a comic review mag here in the UK. Before the issue went to print though, the mag ceased to be, so it was never used. The magazine content was split in two, and read from both the front and the back, so I had to do a wraparound cover which would work both ways up, if you see what I mean!

It appears now in the forth volume of my new sketchbook series, which will be released at the end of this month. I thought however that you'd all appreciated seeing it in this MASSIVE form, feel free to use as your desktop wallpepr!

Heeeeeey peoples! So, first of all, the Weapon of Choice Magazine Launch Party on Friday night, it was a very cool eve, thanks to all who made it out! I'll be posting pics of the canvas I drew in a few weeks...

Right, down to business, Christmas is coming, the gooses are getting chubby and all that, and there's a few little treats in store for you just in time to make it onto your Chrimbo wish list! Whoop!

If you're in or around Bristol this December you'll have the chance to visit two exhibitons which will feature original artwork by your pal Lorenzo. Details will follow soon, so keep your eyeballs peeled!

Oh, and by popular demand, I've bought the release date for Volume 4 of my sketchbook series ahead to November, so those of you wanting them in time for Chrimbo can get 'em!

Well, I've been a very busy 'Enzo these past few months, working on a million and one things as usual including new book deals, computer game stuff, an animated series, an exhibition and lots more inbetween, but I can't announce any of it yet, so I thought I'd better pop in and give you something new to look at and something new to spend your pennies on, if you're so inclined...!

And here it is, the third in my series of "packed to the gills with scribblings" sketchbooks: El Sketchbook Lorenzo Volume 3: ROBOTS!

There's not much else to say other then that if you like 'bots, this book should sort you out with a lot of what you fancy, and it's about 75% previously unseen work, too!

One for those budding creators among you today! I've been asked to take part in a new series of articles over on DeviantArt.com entitled "Ask a Pro" aimed at exploring the many mysteries of the comics industry via Q&A sessions with professional artists and writers. This month's question was about how to break into the industry. For those of you with a passion for comics who want to work in this exciting industry, this will hopefully be a really helpful series of discussions. Here's a little excerpt:

"The theory we had back then, which has continued into all our current projects and will continue into the books we're signed to work on in the coming months and years, is that you never know WHO is going to see your work, or WHAT PART of it they're going to see. Every page, every piece of design, every post on your blog and every publication you appear in has the potential to end up in almost anyone's hands, so you should make sure that as far as possible, you produce your very best work in each and every single page and panel you illustrate..."

A little one to announce that my Bro is currently writing articles for the Terminator Salvation comic from the excellentTitan Magazines! Probaly the most prolific person I know, this is one of a whole slew of gigs Bobby has on the go at the momnet, including working on several new books with me, of which we will be making announcements soon once the contracts are all signed!

In the meantime though, enjoy the robot-based goodness I scribbled up in honour of his latest work, and don't forget to pick up a copy of the comic!

Regular readers will remember that last September I drew a cover for issue 16 of Titan's Tranformers Comic in between all my Monkey Nuts and Dreamworks work, and I thought it was about time to post it up! So, tomorrow is the 8 1/2 year anniversary of my girl and I getting together, here you can check out the card I did for her. Some people may think it's odd to still be celebrating the half years after this long, but if you had a girl like mine, you'd wanna celebrate EVERY day you're with her. And next year she'll be my Wifey! Whoop! Those of you with super-keen eyes will spot Mr Peck, who first cropped up in my proposal comic, which you can still read HERE.

Kustom commissioned Sketches!

I wanted to show you all a few of the Kustom commissioned sketches that I've been drawing for folks in the front of my new sketchbooks. I have many more of these already booked, which I'll be showing you once they're completed. You can also see that these pics have already been laid up onto pages ready to be featured in future Volumes of the sketchbooks.

These three were all "vehicle" commissions, and I thought it fitting to show them, as I can now announce that the theme for El Sketchbook Lorenzo Volume 2 will be "Rods and Rockets", and will feature more vehicle illustrations and concepts than you can shake an extra large Monkey Wrench at! More news on this when it drops in a few weeks...

Oh, and finally, top man and fellow ConceptArt-er KingKoyote was good enough to post a great review of the 1st El Sketchbook Lorenzo on his Blog. Ah! At last I can announce that today is the official launch of my new 100 page sketch book!

EL SKETCHBOOK LORENZO VOLUME ONE: GIRLS AND MONSTERS is the first in a brand new series which will build into an HUGE library of exciting art books. Each volume will be themed, and as you can probably guess, volume 1 focuses on Girls and Monsters. As you may expect, spread across the 100 pages you'll find a huge mixture of concepts, finished lineart, design sheets and convention sketches, all featuring girls or...well...monsters!

To tie in with the launch of the book today, we also have a brand new mini-site, which will be a one-stop-shop for all future volumes. It also stocks other comics products of the finest quality, including, (available to purchase online internationally for the first time ever), our very own Blink Twice comic board.

I've done my best to keep the cost of these books as low as I can, thus keeping prices student-friendly! Those of you who want to splash out a little more though, can get your books Kustomised with an original piece of Lorenzo lineart, which will probably appear in a future volume! Oooh!

Another bit of book release news today...

A little teaser here for a small digest-sized book of pseudo vintage pinup magazine covers I've been working on for a while. I'll show you more of these and give you a link to the store where you can buy the book when I get closer to completing all the pages.

In the meantime, as mentioned last week, the first of my new big sketchbooks (Volume 1 will be themed "Girls and Monsters") is about 25% laid up, so expect news of it's release in the next 8 weeks or so...

New sketch book on the way!

Well, here we are at the start of 2009, and this year will be one full of surprises and exciting new comic-based projects as far as this ole' gallery of mine is concerned.

So, let's start as we mean to go on, with a preview for something I hope you're all going to be into, whatever your reason for stopping by these pages.

I'm currently undergoing the lengthy but enjoyable process of finally putting together an epic sketchbook for release later this year. This baby will be HUGE, and will document a whole stack of my work from the past few years, coving all the different comics and illustration work I've been involved in. Predominantly, it will be designed as a sort of inspiration book, ram-packed with sketches, concepts and ideas that will hopefully help fire-up and kick-start your own projects.

So, here, to give you an appetite for the book, is a little preview page. I'll be showing more of these each month, and of course I'll post up details of where you can buy the book when it's released.

In the meantime, sit back, and give your eyeballs a little trip through the scribblings offered above!

Hey folks!

Before I get to today's piccies, I have a whole TON of news for you, including several Monkey Nuts competitions and things!

First up, those who bought the mighty Guardian Newspaper on Saturday the 22nd Nov will have seen that they're running a "design a monster" type Monkey Nuts competition. Winners will win a trip to the DFC underground HQ, to meet the guys behind the comic and get the chance to see the comic in production etc! A truely great prize for sure!

Next up. for the writer in you, we are very proud to announce that the National year of Reading is running a special Monkey Nuts caption competition! Winners will be judged by Bob and I, but you need to get your entries in by December 20th, so get typing! You can enter the comp HERE.

Thirdly, for those of you who just want to win even MORE stuff, the DFC has a very special advent calender up online, with prizes every day from now until Chrimbo! It utilises my Toy Factory illustration I produced for the Guardian last Chrimbo, GO HERE to win some swag and get down to the excellent festive grooves!!

In other news, my brother Robin (or Bob) is now a lead writer for Titan's excellent new Tranformers Animated comic. He's alread penned about 6 issues' worth of stories, and the first is already on the shelves. The quantitiy of stuff my bro is putting out at the moment is astounding, so stay tuned for lots more releases penned by him as we go into 2009!

Monkey Nuts Channel 5 Live page, and season 2 teaser!

Two little Monkey Nuts pics here, first up, those of you who are already DFC readers will know the first book-length Monkey Nuts adventure came to it's conclusion last Friday, meaning a NEW adventure starts in four days time! Yeah!

Secondly, a break-down of the Channel 5 special I drew on TV a few months ago. As this had to be prepped in about 3 hours, I had to draw like the wind, which meant it came out as quite a simple little page, but I thought I'd show you guys the stages I went through to draw it. As it was being filmed, I decided to fake-up a blueline rough (I usually work on a lightbox, but that doesn't show on camera very well). When the show was put together they actually super-imposed Isla (the news reporter)into the pages of the comic for part of the report, which was very cool.

Malcolm Magic the Big Kahuna Collection: Preview pages 1 to 4

Hey folks!! So, as promised, I can finally officially tell you that the complete book of Malcolm Magic is now available all over the world!! This book was drawn and written by Bob and I as our first forray into the world of comics, it was an on-going experiment, and needless to say we learnt a LOT during the process of the adventure. Despite this, however, it was one of the most enjoyable things I have ever worked on, and without it nothing that we have done since would exist.

Within the book there are two seperate worlds, one in black and white, and the other in Greyscale, this may seem a bit odd at first, but it really helps us to instantly establish which world we're in, and keeps the story flowing. Go with it!

Monkey Nuts! Exclusive preview page! The Monkey Nuts HQ!

So, now that we're a little way into the monkey Nuts adventures (I'm approaching my 80th page of completed full colour artwork) I think it's about time I showed you how the final pages look. Every now and then I'm going to post up a full page for your eyeballs to enjoy, and today we have page 39, being the first page of part 1 of the chapter entitled Breakout Bonanza. Regular readers will remember me posting an in progress shot of the lineart for this a while back. Stay tuned for another full page in the future! Monkey Nuts appears every week only in The DFC!

Some pics here from our appearance at the Telegraph/Waterstones Bath Children's Literature festival this weekend.

Here you can see yours truely with my bro, and some very talented fellow DFC contributers, as well as the man in command, David Fickling. Those of you who were there, will know how much fun we had discussing all aspects of past and future comic work, and generally spreading the word about the mighty DFC.

After our panel we did a signing session, and it was so cool to meet so many new young readers, and talk to them about Monkey Nuts and all that jazz.

Those of you who were following them will know I only got up to issue 6, and already the DFC is nearly at issue 20! So, you'll have to make do with progress shots of the lineart (such as I'm posting today), and various exclusive peeks at the final full colour pages I'll be posting in here.

Just a quick posting to let you know all the shows and shop sighnings and workshops and stuff we're doing in September and October. Hope to see you at a few of them! Meanwhile, here's the blurb from our newsletter mailout:

"After a summer spent diligently producing page after page of comic book nonsense in their Bristol studio, the Etherington Brothers are now happy to announce their End of Year appearance schedule! Yes, indeedy, Bob and Lorenzo will be meeting and greeting lots and lots of comic fans as they commence the official 'Go Nuts' Tour!

For those of you lucky enough to get tickets, the fun will begin on 27th September, at the Bath Festival of Children's Literature panel, when the brothers will be joined by John Aggs (artist on 'John Blake') and Sarah McIntyre (creator of 'Vern and Lettuce'), with David Fickling hosting.

Then it's off to Birmingham for the International Comic Show on the 4-5th October for another DFC panel, comic signings and banter!

The Cheltenham Literature Festival will play host to an Etherington Brothers comic workshop, on the 11th October. With limited places available (first 40 to book get in!) it's first come, first served!

Finally, we'll be hosting two 'Tales On Moon Lane' festival workshops at the Herne Hill and Primrose Hill Children's bookstores. This event will take place on Saturday 25th, with the boys completing one workshop, then being whisked across London to the other store! Exciting times!"

One Night in the City Week! Day 5: The Underwater Lost Panel

Well, here we are at day 5 of our One Night in the City unseen art week, and I hope you folks have enjoyed checking out all this stuff from the vaults. This panel was drawn on a whim, as it depicts a part of a scene taken from waaaay into the story, which I hadn't really even completely decided upon at time of drawing. As with the previous lost panel (see day 2 of the ONITC week's postings) this one never made it past the flat colour stage, but hopefully the mood of the image still translates.

It's time to move on however, as we have lots more to get through before 2008 is out, including tons more Monkey Nuts exclusives, Malcolm Magic news, tour dates, Giant Robots, new contract announcements, Monsters, Pinup Girls, MOON! stuff, and more than a few surprises. One Night in the City Week! Day 2: The Lost Panel No 12

So here we go, day 2 of One Night in the City week, and I'm posting up the first of two "lost" panels that never made it to completion.

This one is panel 12, which would have been the next panel in line after the pic of the girl looking up at the piece of paper (see previous post). This Panel has flat colours only completed.

I'm not going to go into where the story was heading, as it may well continue in another totally different format in the future, but suffice to say, her having to run back into the city was really the start of the whole thing.

This is probably one of the cleanest bits of lineart I ever did just with a pencil. Shortly after this I began working much more with pens and ink to speed up my processes.

One Night in the City Week! Day 1: All the finished panels.

Welcome to One Night in the City week!

For those of you who have never come across it, One Night in the City was a web-strip I started a few years ago. The idea was to do just one panel a month, and to take a nice long time over each pic, as I really wanted to capture the mood and atmosphere in every image, especially as the story was to be told without words.

Well, I managed to keep it up for 11 months, but in the end, paid comic work got in the way, and I had to face up to the fact that I'd never get it completed. However, upon going through my archives recently, I found there were a few images that were either never finished, or I had completely forgotten I'd even drawn! So, I thought I'd do a little ONITC week-long special series of posts to show you guys the previously unseen stuff.

First up though, for the first time in one HUGE image, (with colours re-balanced) I present the full 11 panels which made up the strip as far as it got. Tomorrow, we'll start on the unseen pics. Here's a heads-up on an appearance I'll be making on Tuesday 12th of this month (Aug) in the very cool drinking establishment known as Mr Wolfs right here in Bristol.

I'm lucky enough to have been asked to guest at the latest of the very excellent Weapon of Choice nights at said bar. The WOC eves are a cool meeting of Hip Hop, live art and Noodles, which have thus far been host to some of Bristol's finest Graffiti and urban artists, though next Tues is a special Comic Book installment, and yours truly has been asked to come out and play.

I'll be drawing alongside the excellent Dylan Shipley, a very talented Bristol-based concept artist and all-round nice guy. As you'll see from some of the attatched links, Dylan and I will each be completing a huge (like 6-7ft!) illustration during the eve, which starts at 9pm and rolls on until a bleary-eyed 3am conclusion.

Not sure what I'm gonna draw yet, but I think it's probably gonna be along the lines of some big a$$ robot or something...

Hey folks!! Well, I'm excited to announce that you can now buy the DFC in single issue format anywhere in the world!! That's right, if you just want to try it out, and see if you like it, then you can order any of the back issues as a single purchase! I personally suggest that Monkey Nuts fans may want to go for issue 6, as it has a Monkey Nuts cover, but it's your choice! Anyway, there you have it, Monkey Nuts appears in every issue, so no matter which you chose, you'll still get some nuts!

Monkey Nuts 2008 Tour! Next appearance: Sun 27th July @ The BFI!

So, we had a great time at our recent DFC workshop with a host of enthusiastic young (and not so young) DFC fans last weekend at the Cartoon Museum in London. Bob and I were there with Zak Simmonds-Hurn (awesome artist and co-creator of upcoming DFC series The Strange Strange World of Weird, which is written by my bro) Sarah Mcintyre (Creator of the excellent DFC fan-favorite Vern and Lettuce) and Adam Murphy (another DFC contributer whose strip will appear in the comic in the future). Basically, it was an awesome day, and we had a real blast discussing ideas on how to come up with fun, exciting comics of your own, and generally chatting to all the children and signing copies of the DFC etc.

And the best part is, Bob and I are doing another mini Monkey Nuts workshop later this month! As part of the BFI's Sunday Film Funday (and as part of the their comicbook movies season) we will be showing up with our box of comicy treats on Sunday 27th July, and it's going to be a great time for all you young DFC readers! So, we had a great time contributing to the workshops in the DFC family Fun Day at the Cartoon Museum this weekend just gone, and I'll be posting up some pics of said event in a bit, but first...

...a piccie here of me scribbling away on another Monkey Nuts page, this one depicting some of the cell blocks at the Spike Island Prison on the Isla de Monstera, where our intrepid duo go about the business of crime fighting. At the top of the image you can see the way I build the picture, and how there's very little rhyme or reason to the way I approach it!

Hey Folks! Just to let you know, if you haven't already read it over on the DFC website, Robin and I will be appearing at the Cartoon Museum in London this Saturday (12th July) as part of a DFC Family Fun Day. Come along and get involved in mini comics workshops with ourselves and other top creators from the DFC!

Our Slot, "Monkey Business" will run from 12 noon to 1:30pm, and will be a creative workshop aimed at younger readers. Look forward to seeing you there!!

The Etherington Brothers on ComicSpace - come see us!

So, I've had quite a few mails recently asking why I haven't mentioned either in the blog or on the forums that we have quite a comprehensive page over on ComicSpace. My original idea was to upload the entire backlog of images from the web onto ComicSpace, and then announce it, but I just never got round to posting everything up, or letting anyone know I was there! A few hundred folks have hunted us out and befriended us on there already, but I thought I had better come in and do an official announcement.

The main benefit to the ComicSpace page is that it's all divided up into galleries, unlike my sprawling DeviantArt gallery (which I'm sure I'll never get round to organising properly!) and it's also bang up to date (unlike the gallery sections on SBT). For instance, you can check out an entire section just on my pinups and girlie pics HERE, or go check out some of the old tutorials I used to do HERE. There's lots more besides, so if you want a good, quick reference site with hundreds of our piccies in a nice, tidy order, our ComicSpace homepage is HERE.
